How to Care for a Natural Wax Candle
Natural wax candles are a particular kind of object — beautiful, fragrant, and kind to the environment. A few simple habits will let you enjoy yours for far longer. At CISZA.DESIGN we pour every candle by hand, in small batches, so it matters to us that it reaches you in perfect condition and stays with you for a long time.
1. The first burn — the most important step
The first burn sets everything that follows. Wax has memory: if you don't melt the entire surface the first time, the candle will "tunnel" on later burns, hollowing out in the centre while the wax at the edges goes to waste.
The rule: burn the candle until the whole surface has turned liquid. For candles 8–10 cm in diameter, this usually takes 2–3 hours.
2. Trim the wick before every burn
A long wick is one of the most common mistakes. It causes smoking, uneven burning, and a candle that disappears faster than it should. Before each lighting, trim the wick to about 5–6 mm. Wick trimmers are ideal, but ordinary scissors will do — what matters is doing it before you light the candle, while the wax is cold.
3. Never burn for more than 4 hours
Burning for too long overheats the vessel and can cause the wax to melt unevenly. Two to four hours is the ideal window. After that, extinguish the candle, let it cool completely, and come back to it later.
4. Extinguishing the candle
Avoid blowing it out — this creates smoke and can splash liquid wax. Use a candle snuffer instead, or dip the wick into the melted wax and then straighten it again. Done this way, the wick is ready for the next time you light it.
5. Storing natural wax candles
Natural wax is sensitive to heat and light. Store your candles somewhere cool and dark, away from direct sunlight and sources of heat. Warmth can cause a pale, frosted look on the surface of the wax — a natural process known as bloom, which affects neither the quality nor the fragrance of the candle.
6. Why natural wax rather than paraffin
At CISZA.DESIGN we work with natural wax only — no paraffin. It burns more slowly and more evenly, produces less soot, and is safer to breathe. The fragrance is released gently and lasts, filling a room without ever overwhelming it.
In short
Caring for a natural wax candle asks very little of you: a first burn that melts the full surface, a wick trimmed each time, no more than four hours at once, and a cool, dark place to keep it. Do that, and your CISZA.DESIGN candle will stay with you for a long time.
